When potential clients get in touch with me they often ask how long they need to train with me, they usually expect a fixed answer like Six weeks. Three months. A year. Something clear and simple.
The honest answer is that it depends on you and what you want to get out of your training session.
Some of my clients have came to me wanting to lose weight for their wedding and they have a date in mind where they want to get married. Others have wanted to lose a certain amount of weight, build confidence before a holiday, while other clients have wanted to learn how to lift properly without feeling unsure in the gym. Others don’t have a deadline at all. They just know they’re not happy with where they are.
As a personal trainer in Cardiff I don’t lock people into the idea that they have to train with me forever. That’s not the goal. The goal is to get you to a point where you feel confident and capable on your own.
I won’t rush you or I wont drag my feet, the timeframe will depend on you. If you train consistently and learn the basics so you can build momentum moving forward you can make a lot of progress in short periods of time.
Other clients prefer longer term support. Not because they can’t train alone, but because they like the accountability and push. There’s nothing wrong with that either.
I’ve had clients who stayed for a short block of focused work, hit their target, and then carried on by themselves. They’ll still message occasionally if they want advice or a check in. That’s always fine.
I’ve also had clients who reached their original goal and then realised they wanted more. Maybe they lost the weight they aimed for but decided they now wanted to build muscle. Or they gained strength and then set a new performance goal. The journey evolves.
It really comes down to where you feel comfortable.
One thing I always say is that I don’t want you to feel dependent. If after a period of training you feel confident walking into any gym and setting up your own sessions, that’s a win. If you understand your nutrition well enough to adjust it without panicking, that’s a win too.
You’re not just paying for sessions. You’re learning along the way.
We talk about why we’re doing certain exercises. We talk about why your calories are set where they are. We look at what happens if progress slows. Over time, those conversations build knowledge.
And knowledge builds confidence.
There isn’t a fixed timeline for that because everyone starts in a different place. Some people have trained before and just need direction. Others are starting from scratch and need a bit more time to feel comfortable.
What I won’t do is keep you training just for the sake of it. If you’ve reached your goal and you’re ready to continue alone, I’ll say that. I’d rather you leave feeling strong and capable than feel like you have to stay.
At the same time, a lot of people realise that having a coach keeps them sharper. It’s easy to ease off when no one is watching your form or tracking your numbers. That outside eye can make a difference.
So the real answer is this. You train with me for as long as it adds value to you.
If that’s three months, great. If it’s a year, great. If you reach your target and feel ready to continue on your own, that’s exactly what I want for you.
Because the whole point is progress that lasts, not dependency.
You don’t need me forever. You just need the right support for the stage you’re in.
And when you feel confident, capable, and clear on what you’re doing, you’ll know you’re ready to take it forward yourself.
